Website design appeal matters more then ever. But a redesign can be a longer process then the original design process especially if much content is involved. So, with tight budgets in this economic climate we suggest a mini-face lift. A mini-face lift is adding design elements to the existing layout rather then reorganizing the whole [...]
PBW SiteFlex™ Development Platform
PBW CMS is the content management system developed from the ground up by Point B Web's development team. It has been in production and ongoing development for nearly 3 years and is currently implemented in customized versions on several dozen client websites.
When we began designing and building websites for our clients back in 2001, we quickly realized the importance of empowering our clients to be able to maintain their own content without requiring any special technical skills. We began researching and testing various available off-the-shelf CMS applications and in every instance, these systems fell short in one area or another and particularly in providing simple maintenance and administration of the content for our clients. With that in mind, we set out to build our own content management system. This goes against our general philosophy of leveraging available products and not reinventing the wheel, but we felt strongly in this instance that we could build a reusable, customizable, data driven CMS platform that was designed to meet 75% of most clients' functional requirements and easily customizable to close the gap to 100%.
Because of our ongoing development philosophy and leveraging our work from one project to the next, our CMS platform has come a long way and we have been adding features and enhancements all along the way. We have also received many compliments on the simplicity of the administrative functions and interface. We have also been able to standardize and streamline our implementation processes and practices based on consistency provided by our CMS platform. What does this mean to our potential clients? Quicker, less expensive implementation of your website that is tailored specifically to your business requirements.
Making changes on-the-fly is easy even for non-technical users
PBW CMS™ provides an intuitive WYSIWYG editor for authoring and editing your web content. The editor has advanced capabilities that allow you to upload and insert images, Flash media, even embed video into the content and a free add-on spell checker is available as well. Creating links and popup windows is also simple with the content editor. For advanced content layouts, we can include a number of predesigned templates that can be inserted into a content page with the click of a button and then filled in with your content.
Manage Content Availability
Our CMS has the ability to "stage" content pages with specific start date/time and expiration date/time. This is very useful for posting press releases, time sensistive news and even holiday messages. Just set it up in advance and the content will show up after its start date and stop showing up after its expiration date. This can be applied to full page content as well as banners or sidebar content. We can also customize CMS to direct and restrict content to different types of visitors or specific visitors.
In more advanced implementations of PBW CMS, categorization of content can be enabled and allows us to group the same content pages in multiple ways based on common categories. This allows for more robust navigation capabilities and also provides the ability to relate information together in more intuitive contexts.
PBW CMS has a robust and customizable feature set, as well as a growing number of special purpose add-on modules. While the core content management features can be configured to be used in many types of structured output, sometimes more specific functionality is needed. This is where we have developed unique modules that integrate with, and rely on the core platform, but have specific features and functions. Some examples:
While these are some of the modules we have developed and implemented for clients, there are many other custom modules we have built as well and it is our practice to leverage the development of those custom modules to produce universally reusable and further customizable modules that can meet a broader set of business requirements in future projects.
Menu / Navigation Management
PBW CMS provides administrators with the ability to manage all the menus implemented in their site, including the admin menu itself. Adding and modifying menu options is easy.
Dynamic Search Engine Friendly URLs (DSEFU)
While many CMS applications rely on long, unreadable, unmemorable, search-engine-UNfriendly script URLs such as www.mysite.com/content_page.php?id=4520&session=ftr8789w4fd3098 PBW CMS employs DSEFU technology to make the pages both search engine and user friendly - i.e. www.mysite.com/about-our-widgets.html
PBW SiteFlex™ Represents Our Next Generation CMS Platform
PBW Site Flex™ is an advanced CMS and has we we call Information Relationship Management (IRM) functionality that allows us to link content in various ways. What this means for sites that have large amounts of information is a much more relevant and intuitive visitor experience as the content presented adapts to the visitors navigation through the site.
A Different Approach
While PBW CMS provides all the basic capabilities of content managment and has some specialized modules, PBW SiteFlex is designed to separate and specialize the modules and then use its core functionality to build relationships between each modules' main objects (or records). So, while our core PBW CMS can be used to create an image portfolio, PBW SiteFlex has a module specifically design for this purpose. The modules provide a more robust set of functionality for its purpose and a highly consistent, but flexible set of outputs.
While the main content management is part of the core platform, SiteFlex modules are each designed with a specific and unique purpose. Each one is also completely customizable. We have a number of modules currently available and in use:
